Ito Town at the Edge of the Earth

Quiet & peaceful vacation by the Pacific Ocean

When I think of a good vacation, I always choose some quiet place far away from a crowded city. The choice of Ito was really wonderful - facing the Pacific Ocean it seems to be on the edge of the Earth!

I arrived in Ito by evening and enjoyed beautiful, coral color sunset. The promenade was almost deserted and the view of the town was very soothing. I stayed at K’s House that suggested great accommodation with a relaxing spa bath. The next morning was bright and sunny, so I decided to walk to the ocean. On my way I met many boats and yachts. Then I enjoyed the sight of stones and endless water expanses. I found beautiful shells and stones on the narrow beach strip and just sat down, watching the waves. At lunch time I found a nice restaurant run by a very friendly family. I ate a big plate of sashimi – delicious and fresh raw fish, with rice, miso soup and dessert for very reasonable price. After a lunch break, I walked to another part of Ito where I found small souvenir shops. Their style somehow reminded me of the seaside of England. I picked up a Totoro stuffed toy and some more souvenirs there with no rush. In the evening, I dined at the local cafe with The Beatles theme.

The weather on the ocean side changes often, so the next day was windy. Though the waves were high and the wind was strong, local people were still fishing. After a short walk I decided to see the town. It was busy with everyday businesses. I prefer to go shopping in small towns as there I can take my time. In Ito, one can find trade stalls right on streets selling fish, Japanese pottery, clothes and what not. People in Ito were friendly and attentive, so I enjoyed the communication with locals. My visit at the end of April was really enjoyable and I’d like to come back to Ito some day!

You can reach Ito by Shinkansen to Atami and then by a local train, Ito line.
