Sanja Matsuri Festival 2016

One of the largest Shinto festivals in Tokyo

Sanja Matsuri literally translates into “Three Shrine Festival” and is usually held every year on the third weekend of May at Asakusa Shrine in honour and celebration of the three founders of Sensō-ji.

The festival spans 3 days and attracts over 2 million people to Asakusa every year, making it one of the wildest and most popular festivals in Tokyo.

Expect to see portable shrines (mikoshi) being paraded around the streets by enthusiastic locals, bouncing them up and down wildly as they showcase their genki spirit. Of course, you can also expect delicious street food to be available.
