Oharaimachi

A walk along Ise Shrine's old shopping street

Step back in time (albeit with other tourists in tow) at Oharaimachi, an 800-metre long shopping street on the approach to Ise Grand Shrine. Traipse on the cobblestone streets lined with Edo-style buildings housing shops and restaurants, some of which have been serving pilgrims and tourists for centuries. Classic delicacies on offer here are regional specialities like Ise udon and Ise kamaboko (a type of fish paste), and of course, the ubiquitous soft serve ice-cream in many flavours.
