Step Inside: Sensoji Temple

Exploring inside this temple in Asakusa

Sensoji is a famous buddhist temple in Tokyo, built in the 7th century to house the golden statue of Kannon the goddess of mercy. It was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in 1958.

The entrance to the shrine is through the Kaminarimon gate, along with the inner Hozomon gate. To the left of the Hozomon gate is the Five Story Pagoda, which is approximately 53 meters high. It is the second highest pagoda in Japan.

Located beyond the Kaminarimon gate is Nakamise-dori. This is a famous shopping street lined with shops selling souvenirs, which leads to Sensoji Temple itself.
