Tokyo’s newest cultural landmark is already earning international attention. MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives has been selected for the “World’s Most Beautiful Museums 2026” list by the UNESCO-supported Prix Versailles architecture award, placing it among the standout museum designs of the year.
Located within the massive TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY development near Takanawa Gateway Station, the museum officially opened in spring 2026 on the historic site of Japan’s first railway line. Rather than functioning as a traditional museum focused only on static exhibits, MoN Takanawa was created as a multidisciplinary cultural hub combining art, technology, performance, education, and Japanese tradition.
The building itself is a major part of the attraction. Designed by internationally renowned architect Kengo Kuma and his firm, the six-story structure features a spiraling exterior made with extensive timber and layered glass. The design intentionally connects themes of past and future, nature and city life, while incorporating more than 200 plant species throughout the site.
The name “MoN” also carries multiple meanings connected to both the location and the museum’s concept. It references the Japanese word “mon” (門), meaning “gate,” tying the museum to nearby Takanawa Gateway Station and the historic Takanawa area, which once served as an important entrance point to old Edo. At the same time, the name reflects the museum’s goal of encouraging curiosity and exploration through storytelling, art, and culture. Rather than presenting exhibits in a purely traditional way, MoN Takanawa aims to create a space where visitors can reflect, interpret, and discover new perspectives.
Inside, the museum includes roughly 1,500 square meters of exhibition space, performance areas with large LED installations, tatami spaces, rooftop terraces, workshops, cafés, and even foot baths overlooking the city.
