Mii-dera Temple in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, has been a historic cherry blossom site since the Manyo period. The temple is set to host a lively new event this spring—the Mii-dera Cherry Blossom Awa Odori— bringing the vibrant spirit of Tokushima’s traditional Awa Odori dance to this celebrated sakura destination.

Organized by the Kansai Awa Odori Association with support from Tokushima Prefecture, the Lake Biwa Visitors Bureau, and the Lake Biwa Otsu Tourism Association, this inaugural event will introduce visitors from Kansai and beyond to one of Japan’s most iconic performing arts. Against the backdrop of full-bloom cherry trees, approximately 150 dancers from seven groups will take to the temple grounds, filling the air with music and movement.

The event will feature traditional performances by each participating group, followed by a special showcase in front of the temple’s main hall. As a grand finale, all performers will dance in unison, creating a spectacular display of coordinated energy. Visitors are encouraged to capture the experience and share it on social media to help spread the charm of Awa Odori worldwide.

With its fusion of history, culture, and dynamic dance, the Mii-dera Cherry Blossom Awa Odori promises to be an unmissable celebration of spring.

行き方

Mii-dera Temple can be accessed in 15 minutes on foot (or around 5 minutes by taxi) from Miidera Station, which is served by the Keihan Electric Railway's Ishiyama Sakamoto Line.
