As the chill of late autumn sets in, few things are more comforting in Japan than a steaming bowl of nabe, or Japanese hotpot. This beloved dish typically includes a simmering pot of broth filled with vegetables, tofu, and various meats or seafood, and has deep regional roots across the country. Each area boasts its own distinctive take, such as the rich miso-based Ishikari nabe of Hokkaido to the hearty Hakata motsunabe of Fukuoka.

For three days this November, food lovers can experience this diversity firsthand at the National Local Hotpot Festival SHIZUOKA, held at the Shizuoka Prefectural Convention Arts Center, Granship Plaza. The event gathers hotpots from across Japan, offering visitors a culinary journey from Hokkaido to Okinawa (and plenty of spots in between!) without having to hop on a plane or train.

Alongside regional specialties like Yamagata’s comforting imoni, Akita’s kiritanpo nabe, and Aomori’s scallop hotpot, the festival also features the Shizuoka EXPO Area, where local restaurants showcase ingredients and flavors from within the prefecture. Families can enjoy hands-on workshops, a children’s play zone, street performances, and even a cozy bonfire and roasted sweet potato corner that capture the warmth of the season.
