If you're traveling through Japan in the summer and looking to experience a longstanding local tradition, the Kishu Odori Bundara Bushi festival in Wakayama City is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in community spirit and celebration. Running for over half a century, this vibrant event fills the streets around Wakayama Castle with dancers, music, and and a fun atmosphere.

In response to Japan's increasingly hot summers, the festival now begins a bit later in the evening to ensure a more comfortable experience for dancers and spectators alike. As the sun dips and the air cools, the city lights up with colorful costumes and rhythmic movements that capture the joy and energy of this beloved dance tradition.

Festivities begin the night before with a special warm-up event known as the Ring Dance Eve Festival. Held in Nishinomaru Square beside the castle, the evening invites locals and visitors to join hands and move together in a traditional circle dance. It’s a relaxed and welcoming way to get into the festival spirit.

The main event follows the next evening, when dance groups gather to perform the Bundara Bushi in the streets around Wakayama Castle. Paper lanterns glow overhead as the music echoes through the historic setting, creating a lively summer scene.
