Every August, the mountain city of Kiryu in Gunma Prefecture comes alive with one of the region's most energetic celebrations, the Kiryu Yagibushi Festival. Held on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the month, the event attracts visitors from across Japan who come to experience its dynamic blend of music, dance, and tradition.

The festival is centered on yagibushi, a lively folk performance featuring rhythmic drumming, flutes, and distinctive chants that has been handed down for centuries. Crowds gather around brightly illuminated turrets in the city center as dancers move in circles to the driving beat. With its origins linked to the Kiryu Gion Festival and local performance culture, the event is both a tribute to history and a celebration of community today.

Food stalls line the streets, filling the air with the scent of festival favorites, and visitors are encouraged to don summer attire such as yukata or jinbei to fully embrace the festive atmosphere. Whether you're content to watch the dancers or decide to join the circle yourself, it's easy to be swept up in the rhythm. You can see more of what to expect via the video below.
