Every summer in mid-August, Wake Town in Okayama Prefecture hosts the Wamoji-yaki and Fireworks Festival along the banks of the Yoshii River. At Yoshii River Park, a large hillside display brings the kanji character “Wa” (symbolizing harmony and Japan) to life in flames, stretching approximately 75 meters wide and 65 meters tall.

This event takes its cue from Kyoto's well-known Daimonji-yaki, but with its own local touch. After the character is set ablaze, thousands of fireworks light up the sky above the river, offering a striking mix of fire and bursts of color.

The festival is held annually on August 16th, and it draws both locals and visitors to experience this unique tradition. Attendees typically gather along the riverbed to watch the glowing "Wa" character unfold before the vibrant fireworks show.

Please note that the event operates from 6.45pm until 9.30pm. The Japanese character lighting starts at 8pm, and the fireworks run from 8.30pm until 9pm.

行き方

Yoshii River Park can be accessed in around 15 minutes on foot from Wake Station, which is served by the JR Sanyo Main Line. For those who opt to drive, the venue is a quick 10 minute drive from the Sanyo Expressway’s Wake Interchange.
