Seasonal fun in Tokyo

If you're looking for a fun way to celebrate all things fall in Tokyo, head to the ARK Hills Autumn Festival. The event blends traditional Japanese culture with the modern flair of this urban hub, creating an event that draws families, residents, and visitors alike.

At the heart of the festival is the mikoshi, or portable shrine procession, a tradition that has been carried on in the area for nearly 40 years. With around 200 bearers carrying the ornate shrine through the streets, the procession connects the local community to the historic Akasaka Hikawa Festival while offering visitors a rare glimpse of traditional Japanese spirit right in the middle of the city. Children also take part with their own smaller shrines and floats.

Another highlight is the Bon Odori dance, where people gather around a central tower and dance to everything from classic folk songs to modern tunes accompanied by the beat of Japanese taiko drums. Festivalgoers can also enjoy nostalgic game stalls, workshops exploring a variety of Japanese crafts, and bamboo lantern installations that create a magical evening atmosphere.

Food is another centerpiece of the festival. Restaurants from ARK Hills open outdoor stalls serving hearty seasonal dishes and international flavors, making it easy to enjoy a taste of autumn while strolling between performances and events. Live music, dance, and acrobatic shows add to the energy, making the entire neighborhood feel like a stage.
