Made famous by its recent appearance in the James Bond film "Skyfall," Gunkanjima (also known as Hashima – 軍艦島 / 端島) is an abandoned island that once played a major role in the industrialization of Japan. It was initially the location of an underwater coal mine, when forced labour was prominent before and during the Second World War, but nowadays is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Opened as a tourist attraction in 2009, there are currently various boat tours available departing from Nagasaki City.
